SUMMARY:Timeline of Suffrage
DESCRIPTION:This interactive workshop immerses educators in the historical and ongoing fight for voting rights\, from the nation’s founding to today’s battles against voter suppression. Participants take on the perspective of avatars\, experiencing the struggles\, sacrifices\, and triumphs of marginalized groups as they fought for suffrage. Educators will hear these stories through the voices of youth from affected communities\, highlighting the emotional and social impact of these efforts. \nThe workshop equips educators with tools to bring this rich history into the classroom\, fostering a deeper understanding among students of how past struggles inform present-day challenges. Participants will leave with strategies to empower their students to become active advocates for civic engagement and voter rights in their communities.

SUMMARY:The Missing Stories: South Asian American History from the 1700s to Today
DESCRIPTION:SAADA ensures that South Asian Americans are recognized as an essential part of the American story. In “The Missing Stories\,” SAADA’s Executive Director Samip Mallick will cover how communities come to be excluded from the archival record and how we can address these absences. Samip will provide an introduction to South Asian American history (1800s to present) and will also discuss how community-based archives can become sites for liberation by introducing the audience to SAADA’s archival collections\, programs\, and storytelling projects.

SUMMARY:Opening Up History: On the Road to Brown v. Board of Education
DESCRIPTION:The 1954 Brown v. Board of Education Supreme Court case is hailed as a milestone in American progress but did you know that Black Americans\, Mexican Americans\, Indigenous Americans\, and Asian Americans were fighting for equal access to public education before the famous 1954 case? We will take up the intriguing history of school desegregation through a pluralistic lens by exploring some case studies before 1954: Roberts v. City of Boston (1849\, Black American)\, Tape v. Hurley (1885\, Chinese American)\, Piper v. Big Pine (1924\, Indigenous American)\, Lum v. Rice (1927\, Chinese American)\, Mendez v. Westminster (1947\, Mexican American)\, and a New Jersey case Hedgepeth and Williams v. Board of Education\, Trenton (1944\, Black Americans). These legal cases highlight the reality of American pluralism. We will complicate the story of school desegregation by asking: Do you teach in an integrated school? Lesson plans adapted for K-5 and 6-12 will be made available to participants.

SUMMARY:Providing Sex Education with Cultural Humility
DESCRIPTION:Do you incorporate reproductive justice in your education? Do you know how to properly use the theory of intersectionality? Are you culturally humble? Many educators are unaware of how culture can influence the way comprehensive sex education is taught by teachers and received by students. Our workshop focus of cultural humility allows educators to develop their ability to build appreciation for the diversity of cultures found inside and outside of their classrooms\, which helps to increase their inclusivity. This training will address the difference between cultural proficiency/competency and cultural humility\, measure one’s own intercultural humility using the Intercultural Development Continuum\, as well as concrete definitions and activities.

SUMMARY:The Power of Balance: A Community of Practice
DESCRIPTION:The Power of Balance: A community of practice for educators to find joy\, connect\, reflect\, and create songs together. Each workshop will be unique and build toward a final group creation. No prior musical knowledge is necessary\, though all skills are welcomed. Some segments of these workshops will include exercises\, but there will also be ample opportunity for discovery and entering a creative flow—a mindset characterized by imaginative play and restorative benefits. As the aim is to foster a community of practice\, meeting others in a safe and collaborative environment will be encouraged\, along with personal exploration.

SUMMARY:Holocaust Survivor Speaks and How to Bring them to your Classroom
DESCRIPTION:New Jersey is a pioneer in Holocaust Education and has one of the largest populations of Holocaust Survivors. One of the most meaningful and unique experiences a New Jersey student gets is having a Holocaust Survivor or a descendant of Survivors come to speak to their class. The New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education and its 30 Holocaust Resource Centers throughout the state are available to assist teachers in giving this experience to their students. This program is designed to\, not only give the experience of hearing a Survivor speak but also to give NJ teachers the tools they need in order to meaningfully and appropriately incorporate live testimony into their Holocaust lessons.
